Who are Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners?

Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners (ARNPs) are Nurse Practitioners, Nurse-Midwives, Nurse Anesthetists and Clinical Nurse Specialists. ARNPs are registered in Kentucky and Board certified in their area of specialty. These certifications may include:

  • Family/Adult
  • Pediatrics
  • Geriatrics
  • Anesthesia
  • Newborn Care
  • Mental Health
  • Women's Health
  • Midwifery

  • What services do ARNPs Provide?

    • Order and interpret diagnostic studies such as lab work and X-rays
    • Diagnose and treat common health problems
    • Prescribe medications, treatments, and medical equipment
    • Provide prenatal care and family planning services
    • Provide well-child care including screening and immunizations
    • Promote positive health behaviors and self care skills by educating and counseling
    • Collaborate with physicians and other health care professionals as needed

    ARNPs have advanced education in management of health conditions and practice in clinics, medical offices, emergency departments, and other facilities serving their patients. ARNPs are qualified to manage most common illnesses and injuries and provide education for healthy living.

    They also participate in governmental planning and policy related to health care and conduct health research studies. ARNPs improve access to health care in urban and rural areas.

    Who are Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs)?

    Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs) are experts in a clinical setting and may be involved in practice, education, consultation, or research. CNSs may also serve as case managers for patients and be involved in the development of projects to enhance patients' health.

    Who Are Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs)?

    Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) offer a variety of health care services and quality care for females. CNMs focus on the needs of the woman and her family related to physical care, emotional, and social support. They base their care on the woman's cultural values, beliefs, and preferences for her health care delivery. CNMs specialize for caring for women throughout their lifetime.
