FMCSA Medical Examiner Education Update
The Federal Motor
Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) will soon make the Medical Examiner
Training Specifications available.
This information will include the Medical Examiner Training Curriculum to
provide FMCSA medical examiners with knowledge about commercial motor vehicle
(CMV) drivers and the physical and mental demands of their job. This will
supplement the medical examiner's general physical examination knowledge and
training.
FMCSA is seeking valuable input from the perspective of medical examiners,
training and testing organizations, medical professional associations and
societies, and other members of the public who are interested in these medical
examiner training specifications - an essential part of the medical examiner
certification program.
Keep watching for a ListServ message that will provide details and check the
National Registry Program Web site often for updates.

Medical Review Board Meetings to Resume This Fall
The FMCSA Medical Review
Board (MRB) anticipates that the next public meeting will be during the fall of
2010. A ListServ message will be sent when more information becomes available
about the public meeting. We also encourage you to check for updates at the MRB
Web site. In accordance with Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA)
requirements, a Federal Register Notice will also be posted at least 15 days
before the public meeting.
The MRB is composed of five physicians appointed by the Secretary of
Transportation. The purpose of the MRB is to promote driver safety by providing
information, advice, and recommendations to the Secretary and the FMCSA
Administrator on the development and implementation of science-based physical
qualification standards applicable to interstate CMV drivers.

Medical Examiner and Driver Outreach Meetings a Success
Medical examiners and
CMV drivers had the opportunity to talk one-on-one with representatives of
FMCSA at the first FMCSA "road shows" in Indianapolis and the
Washington, DC area this summer.
These meetings focused on the importance of driver medical examinations and
certification, as well as the latest news and updates on driver health and
safety. FMCSA plans to continue this kind of outreach program to keep the lines
of communication open in both directions. We really do want to hear from you.
