National Health Service Corps’Loan Repayment Program
1972, the National Health Service Corps’ Loan Repayment Program has
provided educational loan assistance to qualified healthcare clinicians
willing to serve in areas experiencing a shortage of primary care. Nurse
Practitioners and Nurse Midwives are among the primary care providers
who are eligible to participate in this program.
Repayment program will award a qualified clinician, including Nurse
Practitioners and Nurse Midwives, up to $60,000 to be used to retire
their educational loans. In exchange for this monetary award, qualified
clinicians are expected to serve two years in an area that is currently
experiencing a shortage of primary healthcare providers. This award is
tax free and is in addition to a healthcare provider’s salary and
employee benefits package offered by their employer. Additional years of
service, in exchange for additional monetary awards, are available
until the healthcare provider’s educational loans are completely paid in
full. Underserved areas can be located in urban as well as rural areas.
