Overview

The University of Kentucky Extracorporeal Life Support course (ECLS) is a two-day course designed for health care professionals interested in cannulation techniques and providing care for adult ECLS patients. It has been designed to follow ELSO Guidelines for Training and Continuing Education for Adult ECLS specialists.

Day 1 course offers 6.5 hours of didactic learning on various ECLS topics including understanding the advanced physiology of ECLS, cannulation strategies, and equipment and patient selection. Lectures will also explore topics related to creating and sustaining a successful ECLS program.

Day 2 (Day 1 is required to attend) is 5.25 hours of simulation-based learning. Attendees will rotate through four stations for maximal hands-on learning: 1) cannulation/initiation; 2) emergency management/troubleshooting; 3) daily management station; and 4) choose one - percutaneous closure, LV preservation, OR prevention of limb ischemia. Exposure to multiple ECLS systems will be available. Note: Space is limited to 72 attendees.
