March 11, 2013 (The Columbus Dispatch) The midwives — Rebecca Wagner, Cassandra Sampsell and Pat Dodge — previously delivered at Mount Carmel St. Ann’s, Grant Medical Center and Mount Carmel East hospital.

Wagner and Sampsell have been at Westerville’s Women’s Contemporary Health-Care. Dodge was at Mount Carmel East. Wagner said she and Sampsell were surprised when OSU doctors contacted them and said they were eager to bring them on. To be recruited by a major academic medical center is a big deal, she said. "The first couple meetings we all just kind of sat speechless.”

Midwives have been embraced in some medical practices, but acceptance and appreciation have been far from universal.

"As a midwife, you’re always educating, you’re always proving yourself,” Wagner said. "We’re always proving who we are and that we’re safe.”
