What is a Nurse Midwife?

Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) offer a variety of health care services and quality care for females. CNMs focus on the needs of the woman and her family related to physical care, emotional, and social support. They base their care on the woman's cultural values, beliefs, and preferences for her health care delivery. CNMs specialize for caring for women throughout their lifetime. Certified Nurse Midwives have advanced education in management of women's health and practice in clinics, medical offices, and other facilities serving their patients.

American College of Nurse-Midwives

We, the midwives of the American College of Nurse-Midwives, affirm the power and strength of women and the importance of their health in the well-being of families, communities and nations. Midwifery as practiced by certified nurse-midwives (CNMs®) and certified midwives (CMs®) encompasses a full range of primary health care services for women from adolescence beyond menopause. These services include primary care, gynecologic and family planning services, preconception care, care during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period, care of the normal newborn during the first 28 days of life, and treatment of male partners for sexually transmitted infections.
